Ncwala-ngoni-festival-1Ncwala ceremony which is the first traditional ceremony on the traditional ceremony calendar in Zambia is a traditional ritual of thanks giving to God almighty for the green.
Probably one of Zambia?s most colourful and popular festivals celebrated, the ceremony is open to all visitors who sometimes put on Ngoni gear popularly known as Vitewe. The Ngoni People of Zambia, parts of Malawi and Tanzania gather at Mtenguleni, about 50km from Chipata on the Great East Road for this old age tradition.
It creates a unique atmosphere of music and motion. The people of the tribe are dressed in leopard skins and they carry among other things, knobkerries, shields and feathers.
A bull is slaughtered and the paramount chief is served with fresh blood by an Induna Lupoko and the chief drinks the fresh blood from
the animal.
Some members of the Ngonis then rush at the dead animal and cut the carcass into pieces.
The traditional ceremony is also commemorated in honour of the many tribal wars the brave Ngoni warriors fought and triumphed in their
search for safer farm lands as they trekked from South Africa.
Ncwala offers an opportunity for the masses to delve into the Ngoni culture and retrace the history of the Ngoni people from the days they left their homeland South Africa under the great King Zwangendaba.
