ABOUT UGWUEME IN AGWU LGA OF ENUGU STATE, NIGERIA

 



Agwu is the headquarters of AGWU LGA of Enugu state, Nigeria. It is the Orientation Training Centre for National Youth Service corps members posted to Enugu State. It shares boundary withAninri LGA and Ivo LGA of Ebonyi State in the East,Nkanu West LGAs, in the west by Oji River LGA and north by Udi. The present day Agwu was carved out of the greater Agwu local govt area which include Aninri and orji river local govt areas.

Agwu market is known as Orie Agwu which opens every four market days, vvarious farm products are been sold in the market on wholesale and retail every four days. Many people from different communities takes their farm produce to sell in the market in exchange for other commodities they cannot produce. People from far and near like Nkanu and Enugu urban comes to Orie market for purchasing of produce especially vegetables and cassava.

Geographically, Awgu LGA is located approximately between latitudes 06 00’ and 06 19’ North of the Equator and longitudes 07 23’ and 07 35’ East of the Greenwich Meridian.

The population is not equally distributed; Manyareas are scarcely populated while few others areas are full of activities.Many of the population settle down at the hill foot because ithas richer soil which support better crop yield.

Awgu has many springs and streams which flows seasonal, some drys up during the dry season (November- March) and flows well during the wet season (April to October). Most of the streams source from top of the hills and flow downhill. In the rainy season runoffs are collected by the streams which in turnsincreasee their volume and velocity.Other towns in Awgu Local Government Area are:  Ugwueme, Mgbowo,Agbogugu, Isu-Awa, Ituku, Ihe, Ogbaku, Owelli, Ogugu, Agbudu, Amoli, Mmaku, Ugbo, Obeagu, Mgbidi, Nkwe, Ezere, Awgu, Nenwenta, Awgunta.

  UGWUEME

Ugwueme is one of the communities in Agwu L.G.A, which is located at an elevation of 304 meters above sea level and has about 174,152 populations.

ORIGIN



EME has two brothers ISU and AKU whose father is ochi. Issues arose from the three brothers about sharing of property, Eme as a hunter left home angrily to dwell in a hilly area called Ugwuikpa, his brothers realized their mistake and sought after him, Eme moved hinterland to dwell among dangerous animals in the jungle which is called OKPUKPONKPUME now. When he finally settled down, he got married and had a son called Agu. AGU had three sons namely, IRE, AGU, OBU, they were later renamed to IREAGU, AMA-AGU and OBU-AGU consecutively. In summary the three sons of Nga migrated to different parts of the hilly areas called ugwueme.
