The Day a Taxi Driver Taught Me a Life Lesson It was one of those days when nothing seemed to be going right. My flight had been delayed, my luggage had taken forever to arrive, and by the time I finally stepped out of the airport, exhaustion had completely taken over. All I wanted was to get to my hotel, take a shower, and forget the day had ever happened. I hailed a taxi and settled into the back seat. The driver was an older gentleman with a warm smile. As we pulled away from the airport, he noticed my frustration and asked, "Long day?" I nodded. "Very long," I replied. For a few minutes, we drove in silence. Then he pointed to the traffic ahead. "See that?" he said. I looked up. Cars stretched endlessly down the road. "We can sit here complaining about the traffic," he continued, "or we can enjoy the journey while we're in it. Either way, we're going to be here for a while." I laughed politely, thinking it was just small t...

Avoiding Overstaffing and Understaffing in Hotels

Image
Avoiding Overstaffing and Understaffing in Hotels In the hotel business, people are one of your greatest assets and one of your biggest operating costs . Having too many employees can significantly increase payroll expenses, while having too few can lead to poor service, employee burnout, guest complaints, and lost revenue. The real challenge for hotel managers is finding the right balance: having the right number of people, with the right skills, in the right department, at the right time. What Is Overstaffing? Overstaffing occurs when a hotel employs more people than it needs to operate efficiently. For example, a hotel may schedule ten front-desk employees during a period when guest arrivals are low and only four or five employees are actually required. While the hotel may still provide good service, it is spending money on labour that is not generating sufficient value. Problems caused by overstaffing include: Increased payroll and overtime costs Lower employee productivity H...

The New Luxury: Why More People Are Choosing Experiences Over Expensive Things

Image
The New Luxury: Why More People Are Choosing Experiences Over Expensive Things There was a time when luxury was measured by the size of your house, the car you drove, the designer clothes you wore, or the number of expensive things you could afford. Today, something is changing. More people are beginning to ask a different question: “What kind of life am I actually living?” And that question is changing the meaning of luxury. For many people, true luxury is no longer simply about owning more. It is about experiencing more, feeling better, having freedom, creating memories, and spending time with people who matter. The Rise of Experiential Luxury A beautiful handbag can bring excitement, but the excitement may eventually fade. A trip to a place you have always dreamed of visiting can become a story you tell for years. A weekend away with your family. A quiet morning overlooking the ocean. Dinner in a city you've never visited. A wellness retreat. A cultural experience. A spontaneo...

Others are still busy with local fishing and transportation but have lost the commercial importance they once enjoyed. Yet beneath the quiet surface of these rivers lies a fascinating story—a story of trade, enterprise, migration and community life . When Rivers Were Highways Eastern Nigeria is blessed with an extensive network of ...

On the other hand, too many employees can significantly increase labour costs and reduce profitability. So, how does a hotel determine the right staff-to-guest ratio?
