The capital city is Asaba, located at the northern end of the state, with an estimated area of 762 square kilometres (294 sq mi), while Warri is the economic nerve center of the state and also the most populated located in the southern end of the state. The state has a total land area of 16,842 square kilometres (6,503 sq mi).
Delta State has scores of attractions that are simply compelling. Fascinating palaces, historic sites, monuments, birthplaces of famous people, traditional festival, crafts centres - name it - are all here. Examples are:
NANA's PALACE, KOKO
This is a Living History Museum, the only one in Nigeria. It was built by Chief Nana Olomu of Ebrohim. He was a powerful nineteenth century indigenous entrepreneur. The magnificent edifice is a reflection of his grandeur. His personal effects are housed in it and they portray his enlightened contact with the British Empire under Queen Victoria. Koko is in Warri North Local Government Area. Access is by road through Warri to Koko.
ASABA BEACH
The beauty of Delta State is held together by the dozens of rivers, streams and creeks which crisscross it. The majestic Niger, one of the most famed rivers of Africa, washes the shores of the capital city, Asaba. Further downstream, it breaks into the dozens of creeks through which it empties itself into the Atlantic. During the dry season, the golden sandbanks of the Niger are a sight to behold and ideal for relaxation.
ABRAKA RIVER RESORT MOTEL
Located in the quiet university town of Abraka in Ethiope East Local Government Area, Abraka River Resort Motel is ideal for those who want to escape the noise and tensions of city life. Here, guests can swim, boat, fish or simply relax by glass-clear Ethiope River. There are also lawn tennis, squash racquet and badminton courts. Well-apportioned accommodation, a spacious conference centre and appetizing cuisine complete the list of attractions. Access is by road through Warri to Abraka or Asaba through Agbor to Abraka.
RIVER ETHIOPE SOURCE
River Ethiope, reputed to be the deepest inland waterway in Africa, has its source at the foot of a giant silk-cotton tree at Umuaja in Ukwuani Local Government Area. It then flows through seven Local Government Areas in the State. By the time it reaches Sapele it has become deep enough to provide a harbour for ocean-going vessels. It is one hundred and seventy-six kilometers long. Access to the site is from Warri through Abraka and from Asaba through Agbor, Umutu to Umuaja. These rivers, their tributaries and distributaries as well as several lakes make Delta State the paradise of those interested in River Tourism. They can enjoy sport fishing canoeing, speed boating, and swimming and, of course, varied seafood in our beautiful State
TRADITIONAL FESTIVALS
The traditional festivals of Delta State are the most obvious harvests of its cultural wealth. Every community has at least one festival. Most are celebrated annually, while some are biennial. A few, like the Edjenu of the Agbarha Clan in Ughelli North Local Government Area, take place only once or twice in a lifetime. All festivals are occasions for display of the rich arts of the people. These festivals are what truly make Delta State "the land of one thousand dances". Intending tourists should direct enquiries about exact dates and periods to the Delta State Tourism Board . Below is a picture of the Ishe Festival for peace and progress in Ewulu town of Aniocha South Local Government Area and the Oki Masquerade of Torugbene in Burutu Local Government Area.
ARAYA BIBLE SITE
A copy of the Holy Bible is believed to have descended to this spot miraculously from heaven around August, 1914. The site now attracts thousands of Christian Pilgrims, especially during the Easter Season. Access to it is easier during the dry season (October to April).
